1. Culture for kids, why is it important?

Culture defines what kids will focus their attention on, what background knowledge they bring to learning, how they interpret the world to give it meaning, and how they will value that learning. The lesson scheme aims to encourage kids to become informed spectators through attending theatre and dance performances, galleries (many galleries go out of their way to be family-friendly), exhibitions, opera, museums, concerts and heritage sites, to learn a musical instrument, to write creatively. They will also become participants and creators by learning an instrument, singing, acting, dancing, producing an artwork, making films or visiting an exhibition especially if they can work directly with professional artists, writers and actors.

3. How to teach to your kids Culture?

Many of culture activities are already offered often in schools – music groups, drama productions, theatre visits, for example. All kids should have time to listen to and participate in music, art, drama, dance every week.
Some kids might be intimidated—or bored—by the hushed, hallowed halls of the great museums, but not if they are on a private tour with an enthusiastic art historian who knows how to keep kids engaged and get them excited about culture. It’s worth visiting the shop before a gallery and letting your kids choose postcards of pictures that appeal to them. That way, they can experience the same enthusiasm of recognition adults enjoy when they come across the original.

“No! I don’t want to go to the museum! It’s very boring!” That your children might express at the idea of learning more about culture. It’s a natural instinct we have as parents to want our children to appreciate the great things in life.
But how do we go about make our kids to rush to the car with enthusiasm at the prospect of going to the museum or gallery? We must avoid making it a chore or something they have to do just to get mom o dad off their backs. It’s ok if they spend time with cultural stuff because its part of what you do as a family. But it must not become the center of a big fight and struggle. So what can we do?
- The first place children will begin to understand the love of culture will be when they see it in you.
- If enjoyment of culture is a value to you, let the children see that passion in you.
Don’t keep from dinner table conversation or from your adult interaction your emotions and reflections of the great things about culture. If it is expressed sincerely and comes from your heart, your kids will hear that and it will become a value to them.
- You can capture that feeling of fun by making their excursion into the art word fun and exciting, kids love to have fun with their parents.
- When its time to go to the galleries or museum, put yourself in your most fun loving mood.
- Make the trip lighthearted and full of adventure.
- You can make a game of the trip by creating games with small prizes for the kids to play as they go through the galleries and admire the artworks.
- Surround your time on excursion with the kids with family events that everyone enjoys.
- When you find out about special cultural events, make sure your kids are aware of it and once in a lifetime opportunity to explore some part of the art work.

The school also may be building that excitement culture excursion too so you can use it to make that trip into the word of culture especially exciting. Good luck discovering great culture!
